REHEARSALS:

Rehearsals will take place on the evening of Friday 30 October at 7pm and the afternoon of Saturday 31 October from 1.30pm, until before the performance on Saturday evening.

About the Play

It begins with a gunshot and a scream… Robert and Freda Caplan, are holding a dinner party with their successful publishing friends. Seemingly, they have the world at their feet, but they little know they are approaching a “dangerous corner”, as a chance comment sparks a series of revelations surrounding the suicide of Robert's brother Martin the previous year. Betrayal and fraud are exposed, shattering the foundations of their comfortable existence. This time-warping thriller by JB Priestley (An Inspector Calls) promises Halloween shocks for characters and audiences alike, as it asks: Just how much truth can we take in our private lives?

CASTING

It’s a rehearsed reading, so all performers are welcome, and we strongly encourage actors of all backgrounds and identities to audition for any role. (Playing ages can be flexible depending on overall casting. Most of the characters are written in their 20s to 40s, but some could easily be older).

ROLES :

Robert Caplan (male): A director of the publishing firm and the host of the dinner party. He initially believes in facing the complete truth, only to watch his entire world and marriage collapse as the secrets pile up. “A good specimen. You may not always respect his judgement, but you cannot help liking him.” - JBP

Freda Caplan (female): Robert's wife. She secretly loved her dead brother-in-law, Martin. “A handsome and vivacious woman.” - JBP

Gordon Whitehouse (male): A junior partner at the firm and Betty’s husband. He maintains a fragile, fake facade of a happy marriage and harbours his own secret attachments. “An attractive, if slightly excitable youngster.” - JBP

Betty Whitehouse (female): Gordon's sensitive, emotional wife, who is secretly carrying on an affair. “A very pretty young thing.” - JBP

Charles Trevor Stanton (male): A hard-edged partner at the firm who believes that uncovering the truth is dangerous. “A man with a rather studied and slightly sardonic manner.” - JBP

Olwen Peel (female): A close friend of Freda and Betty and an employee at the firm. She makes the pivotal slip-up about recognizing Martin's cigarette box. “A dark, distinguished creature.” - JBP

Maud Mockridge (female): An older, observant novelist whose books are published by the company. “Your own idea of what a smart middle-aged female novelist should be.” - JBP

Diversity, Inclusion & Casting Vision

PTC is committed to diversity and inclusion. We want a membership that is reflective of the diverse communities within London. We actively encourage all performers to audition for the roles which they feel best suit their skills.

Where ethnicities are not listed against the characters, we would openly encourage actors of all ethnicities to consider those roles.

Our company is run by volunteers and we expect all actors cast in a play to volunteer for Front of House duties at least once a year. Our shows could not go up without our Front of House volunteers.

Costs

Please note that this is an amateur production. You need to be a member of Putney Theatre Company to audition. That cost is currently £30 a year.  There is a £10 show fee which includes a contribution toward your script (which you can keep after the performance).

Photography on this website is provided by numerous members over the years. In particular we would like to thank: Ben Copping, Martin Jessop, Rich Evans and Steve Lippett who have contributed so much to capturing our productions in such amazing quality.
