Apologia

by Alexi Kaye Campbell

directed by Jim Dixon

Tuesday 17th - Saturday 21st October

Studio: 7.45pm

"You were never there. I have to tell you now that the thing I remember most about you is your absence..."

Kristen Miller is a celebrated art historian and political activist whose anticipated memoir has recently hit book store selves. On the night of her birthday, both her sons and their respective partners are on their way to her house to celebrate. With her memoir having failed to even mention the fact she had any children, Kristen is about to face some harsh truths as her chickens come home to roost. Never one to shy away from her own version of integrity, tensions are rising rapidly to the surface as everyone bares their version of the past.

Alexi Kaye Campbell's Apologia is a powerful truthful family drama that delves into how the past can shape the present and examines the sacrifices we are willing to make to fight for what we believe in, no matter how it impacts the ones we love. Each role is meaty and believable, making this a real 'actors' show!

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Kristen - Female, 60s

Kristen is a child of the 60s and a social radical whose art history writing is celebrated across the world, but her track record as a mother is patchy, at best. She is intelligent, opinionated, proud and prickly but with an unflinching dedication to her beliefs.

Peter - Male, 40ish

Kristen's eldest son. Peter has moved away from the chaos of his upbringing by working his way up the ranks in a high-end bank and, recently, through Christianity. He moves through life with gritted teeth, but this night he needs to get a few things off his chest.

Trudi - Female, late 20s-early 30s

Peter's American fiancée. Trudi is sweet, somewhat naive and dedicated to Jesus. Beneath her nervous and smiling exterior, she carries more wisdom and emotional insight than one might expect.

Simon - Male, late 30s

Kristen's second son. Deeply troubled and unable to hold down work or relationships. Possible substance abuse issues. Simon is only in one scene, but it is a deeply powerful and important one.

Claire - Female, 30ish

Simon's partner and recently successful TV actress. She is glamorous and somewhat conceited. A constant thorn in Kristen's side, she is almost the opposite of her, but her grit and tenacity is admirable.

Hugh - Male, 60s-early 70s

Warm, friendly and deeply loyal to Kristen. Hugh is a mature gay man who has been at Kristen's side since their youth, through thick and thin. Often acting as peacemaker, Hugh's sense of humour puts people at ease and makes him effortlessly likeable. He is defensive of Kristen, though, and understands her better than anyone.

PLEASE NOTE

We are committed to improving diversity in our casting and, unless stated for artistic reasons, we aim to actively adopt an inclusive casting policy.

This is an amateur production. You do not need to be a member of PTC to audition, but actors and crew will need to become members for £30 a year by direct debit. A £25 show fee will also need to be paid by all actors in the production. We encourage you to become a member of PTC anyway, even if not cast.

Our company is run by volunteers and we expect all actors cast in a play to volunteer for Front of House duties at least once a year. Our shows could not go up without our Front of House volunteers.

Photography on this website is provided by numerous members over the years. In particular we would like to thank: Ben Copping, Martin Jessop, Rich Evans and Steve Lippett who have contributed so much to capturing our productions in such amazing quality.
