Last of the Haussmans Auditions

by Stephen Beresford

directed by Frances Bodiam

11th December 7.00pm
13th December 7.00pm

Recalls: 16th December 7.00pm

When Judy summons her grown-up children and grand-daughter to the dilapidated family home on the Devon coast, there must be a good reason. The Haussmans reunited are a family at odds with each other and siblings Nick and Libby rage at their mother’s wayward lifestyle. The play is set during a long, hot summer fading to winter, and the family in turn love and hate one another amid intrusions from the outside world. Comedy and pathos, hilarity and tears ensue as the awfulness of their past and present is revealed.

Performed at the National Theatre in 2012 starring Julie Walters, Helen McCrory and Rory Kinnear, The Stage said of the play, “ … gloriously textured, utterly authentic… hilarious and haunting.”

Please email frances@flametreepublishing.com if you would like to audition and advise which date you will be attending.

List of characters

There are six cast members demanding skilled actors who would love to get their teeth into some excellent dialogue and intense performing.  As part of the rehearsal period, we will be begin without any scripts, working on character creation and definition, with focus on exploring and creating the dynamics of the family unit. In these workshops we'll be using some theatre practitioner techniques to achieve this.

 Characters: 3 Female, 3 Male

I've included their playing ages below and a few words to describe each character for audition purposes.  I don’t want to be too prescriptive as I would rather explore and develop the characters through the auditions and rehearsal process.

Judy Haussman (Sixties)

Forceful, charismatic, impulsive, outspoken, effusive, anti-establishment

Libby (Judy’s daughter, Forties)

Neurotic, insecure, needy, outspoken, resentful, vulnerable, sensible, brittle

Nick (Judy’s son, Thirties)

Anxious, impulsive, insecure, vulnerable, cowardly, witty, loving, addict

Summer (Libby’s daughter) Teenage (fifteen)

Resentful, rebellious, sharp-witted, sensible

Peter (Doctor, Fifties/Sixties)

Charming, charismatic, bored, laconic, scheming

Daniel (student, Late Teens)

Shy, enthralled, outsider

(The actor playing Daniel needs to be comfortable wearing only swimming trunks on stage.)

Company Audition Notes:

  • We are committed to improving diversity in our casting and unless stated for artistic reasons, we aim to actively adopt an inclusive casting policy.
  • This is an amateur production.  You do not need to be a member of PTC to audition but actors and crew will need to become members for £25 a year – direct debit, or £30 otherwise.
  • A £25 show fee will also need to be paid by all actors in the production.  We’d encourage you to become a member of PTC anyway even if not cast.
  • Our company is run by volunteers and we expect all actors cast in a play to do Front of House at least once a year. Our shows could not go up without our Front of House volunteers.

Photography on this website is provided by numerous members over the years. In particular we would like to thank: Ben Copping, Martin Jessop, Rich Evans and Steve Lippett who have contributed so much to capturing our productions in such amazing quality.
