About the Play

12 Angry Men is a critically acclaimed 1957 courtroom drama directed by Sidney Lumet adapted by Reginald Rose from his 1954 teleplay. It follows 12 diverse jurors deliberating the fate of a young man accused of stabbing his father to death. The judge has directed the jury to find the young man guilty if there is no reasonable doubt. Initially voting 11-to-1 for conviction, a lone juror introduces ‘reasonable doubt’. leading to an intense clash of morals and prejudices amongst the jurors.

We will be using Reginald Rose’s script for his television play in this rehearsed reading. And we will be using gender neutral casting. This is a members only production and all members are welcome to audition. It is a rehearsed reading so will be script in hand. There will be minimal set and props.

CASTING

12 Angry (Wo)Men

It’s a rehearsed reading, so all performers are welcome, and we strongly encourage actors of all backgrounds and identities to audition for any role.

ROLES

FOREPERSON: A small, petty person who is impressed with the authority they have. Forceful, but not very bright.

JUROR NO. 2: A meek, hesitant person who finds it difficult to maintain their own opinions. Easily swayed and usually adopts the opinion of the last person they have spoken to.

JUROR NO. 3: A very strong, forceful, extremely opinionated person. They lack a sense of humour and are intolerant of other’s opinions.

JUROR NO. 4: Seems to be a person of wealth and position. They speak well. Their only concern is with the facts in this case, and they are appalled at the behavior of the others.

JUROR NO. 5: A naive, frightened younger person who takes their obligations in this case very seriously but who finds it difficult to speak up when older people are talking.

JUROR NO. 6: An honest person who reaches decisions slowly and carefully. They listen to and then accept other’s opinions if they appeal to them.

JUROR NO. 7: A loud, brash person who has more important things to do than to sit on a jury. They get angry quickly and form opinions on things they know nothing about. A bully and a coward.

JUROR NO. 8: A quiet, thoughtful, person. They can see all sides of every question and constantly seek the truth. A strong, yet compassionate person who wants justice to be done and will fight to see that it is.

JUROR NO. 9: A mild, gentle older person who feels defeated by life and is now merely waiting to die. A person who mourns the days when it would have been possible to be courageous.

JUROR NO. 10 An angry, bitter person, who enjoys picking fights. They place no value on any human life save their own. They have been nowhere and are going nowhere and know it.

JUROR NO. 11: A refugee from Europe. They speak with an accent and are very self-effacing, but they will honestly seek justice because they have suffered injustice.

JUROR NO. 12: A person from the world of advertising who thinks of human beings in terms of percentages, graphs and polls and has no real understanding of people. They are a bit of a snob.

Friday 7th August 7-10pm. Allocation of roles and read through.

Saturday 8th August 10am – 1pm Blocking and read through

Saturday 8th August 2pm – 6pm Read through and tech.

Saturday 8th August 7.30pm Rehearsed reading.

GENERAL

We are committed to improving diversity in our casting and, unless stated for artistic reasons, we aim to actively adopt an inclusive casting policy.

This is an amateur production. You need to be a member of PTC to audition for rehearsed readings. There will be no show fee however you may be required to pay for, or contribute to, a copy of the script.

Our company is run by volunteers and we expect all actors cast in a play to volunteer for Front of House duties at least once a year. Our shows could not go up without our Front of House volunteers.

In addition to actors we are looking for a Stage Manager, audition helpers and someone to rig a simple lighting state.
